Full Details:

ASTM F1506 is available for viewing online at: https://www.astm.org/

ASTM F1506 sets the performance, testing, and labeling requirements for flame-resistant apparel worn by electrical workers exposed to arc flash and thermal hazards. It ensures garments meet strict flammability and arc rating standards in compliance with OSHA 1910.269, NFPA 70E, and NESC.

ASTM F1506 – Standard Performance Specification for Flame Resistant and Arc Rated Clothing

What is ASTM F1506?

ASTM F1506 is the primary North American standard for flame-resistant (FR) and arc-rated (AR) clothing used by workers exposed to electrical arc flash hazards. It establishes the minimum performance, testing, and labeling requirements that protective garments must meet before they can be used in electrical safety programs.

Garments that comply with ASTM F1506 help employers meet the PPE requirements of OSHA 1910.269, NFPA 70E, and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).

Why ASTM F1506 Matters

Electrical workers rely on arc-rated clothing to reduce burn injuries during an arc flash incident. ASTM F1506 ensures that FR garments:

  • Resist ignition and self-extinguish after flame exposure
  • Maintain flame resistance after repeated laundering
  • Are tested to determine their Arc Rating (ATPV or EBT)
  • Are permanently labeled with critical safety information
  • Meet recognized industry safety requirements

ASTM F1506 Testing Requirements

To comply with ASTM F1506, fabrics must pass two primary tests.

1. Flame Resistance (ASTM D6413)

The fabric must:

  • Self-extinguish within 2 seconds
  • Have a maximum char length of 6 inches
  • Meet these requirements when new and after 25 industrial wash cycles

This ensures the fabric continues to provide flame resistance throughout its expected service life.

2. Arc Flash Performance (ASTM F1959)

The fabric is exposed to a controlled electrical arc to determine its Arc Rating.

Testing establishes:

  • Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV), or
  • Breakopen Threshold Energy (EBT)

The resulting Arc Rating is displayed on the garment label in cal/cm², allowing employers to select PPE appropriate for the calculated arc flash hazard.

Garment Labeling Requirements

Every ASTM F1506-compliant garment must include a permanent label showing:

  • Arc Rating (cal/cm²)
  • Statement of compliance with ASTM F1506
  • Manufacturer name
  • Garment size
  • Fiber content
  • Care instructions
  • Product tracking or identification code

This information helps employers verify compliance and properly manage PPE programs.

Important Notes

  • Different garment colors made from the same qualified fabric generally do not require separate arc testing.
  • ASTM F1506 is a pass/fail performance specification.
  • Compliance requires both flame resistance and arc performance testing.
  • Meeting ASTM F1506 supports compliance with OSHA 1910.269, NFPA 70E, and the NESC, but employers must still conduct an arc flash risk assessment and select PPE appropriate for the hazard.
